Stump grinding in Lafayette, LA
A leftover stump trips mowers, sprouts suckers and can draw termites. Here's how grinding works and what to ask before the grinder shows up.
Stump grinding uses a machine with a spinning cutter wheel to chew the stump into chips, down below the surface. Afterward you can fill the hole with soil and lay sod, plant a bed nearby, or put in a patio. It's much faster and less disruptive than digging out the whole root ball, which on a big oak can spread well past the drip line.
What to ask before grinding
- How deep? Depth depends on what goes there next. Sod needs less than a new tree or a slab.
- What happens to the chips? Some companies leave them as mulch, some haul them, and some charge for hauling.
- Surface roots? Big roots running across the lawn may be ground as a separate item.
- Utilities? Grinding goes into the ground, so ask whether the company will request a Louisiana 811 locate first.
Why does 811 matter for a stump?
Louisiana's dig law requires anyone excavating to notify the 811 center at least 48 hours ahead, not counting weekends and holidays, so utilities can mark their lines. Gas, water, power and fiber lines often run near old trees, and a grinder wheel doesn't stop for a service line.
Wet ground and access
Grinders come in sizes. A compact machine fits through most backyard gates, while big stumps need a heavier unit. After a week of rain, clay soils in Lafayette Parish get soft, and a crew may suggest waiting or laying mats so the machine doesn't rut the lawn.
Old stumps and termites
Dead wood in contact with soil is food for termites. LSU AgCenter notes that Formosan termites build large nests, and an old stump near the house is one more place for a colony to settle. Grinding it out removes that wood.
Is stump grinding included with removal?
Not always. When you get a tree removal quote, ask whether grinding is included or priced separately.
The tree company prices the job after it has seen the tree, what's underneath it and how a truck or lift can reach it. We don't quote prices, and any number given over the phone before a visit is a rough starting point at best.

Common questions
Will a ground-out stump sprout again?
Some species can sprout from roots left behind. Grinding deep enough and cutting new sprouts usually handles it.
Can I plant a new tree where the stump was?
It's usually better to plant a few feet away from the chip-filled hole. Ask how deep to grind if you plan to replant.
